2013 Mid-Market Report

This report looks at the contribution the Mid-Market makes to the country's economic performance and the unique challenges facing this sector.

Number of enterprises and turnover by section

In the 2011 financial year, there were 21,049 Mid-Market businesses in New Zealand, or 4.8% of the total number of enterprises.

The largest share of businesses by number is made up of small enterprises, which are 95% of the total, against large businesses, which are just 0.3%.

Despite the relatively small number of enterprises, in 2011 the Mid-Market generated a total annual turnover (based on weighted total income) of $145 billion, 25.4% of the total.

Profitability and turnover improved for the Mid-Market. This general upturn is in line with broader improvements in the economy.
